Naaks had once been a fairly large town, nestled about twenty miles from the northeastern base of the towering Morgrun’s Mantle in the region of Hauth. Its towering silhouette loomed over the region like a silent, indifferent god, casting a shadow that seemed to deepen the isolation of this forsaken settlement.
When the Hauth Civil War had ignited, Naaks severed its ties to the lordship of Hauth, carving a brutal independence from its former rulers. Free from any guiding hand, the town slipped deeper into its own dark nature, becoming an untamed bastion where law held no sway. Without oversight, Naaks drew to itself all manner of outcasts, exiles, and wicked souls, each bringing their own desperate ambitions to the town’s winding streets.
Just two miles beyond Naaks lay the River of Flame—a thousand-foot-wide lava flow that oozed its way from the distant Mantle. This smoldering river wound its way across the landscape at an agonizingly slow pace, a molten artery of the mountain itself. On calm days, the oppressive heat settled over the town, its air thick with the scent of sulfur. Yet, whenever fierce winds swept through, the temperature dropped, swirling the town in smoke and ash that clung to buildings and clothes alike.
Naaks was ancient, a town etched with scars of its past. Its streets were filled with the ragged, the destitute, and the depraved. Crime thrived in every shadowed alley, and bloodshed was a common sight. Violence was no stranger here, nor were the undead, who sometimes wandered the edges of town as if beckoned by an invisible, foul odor lingering over Naaks. Whether this stench was merely the odor of decay or something darker, none could say, but the undead moved through the town’s outskirts with a disturbing familiarity.

When the rains came in autumn, the southern limits of Naaks transformed into a mire of rot and ruin. Floodwaters would sweep in and linger, leaving much of the area abandoned, a desolate wasteland of crumbling shacks and half-drowned buildings. Despite the decay, a few stubborn souls clung to life in the flooded quarter, fashioning makeshift homes atop what remained above water. They clung to the edges of existence, just as Naaks clung to the edges of humanity, both slowly sinking under the weight of time, darkness, and ruin.
Notable Locations:
Gremloke Abbey
A once-holy site, Gremloke Abbey has fallen into ruin over the years and now stands as a twisted remnant of its past. The abbey is perched on the northern edge of town, where eerie echoes and the whispers of the past are heard in its collapsing halls. Its basement is said to harbor tunnels that connect to caves in Morgrun’s Mantle, adding to the town’s reputation as a refuge for unsavory characters—and possibly more. Legends tell of undead priests who wander the abbey grounds, drawn to the unholy energy left behind from dark rituals conducted by past inhabitants.
Aguere
The center of Naaks’ dilapidated southern limits, Aguere is the flooded quarter of town. Shacks built on stilts dot the landscape, with crumbling bridges linking the scattered settlements. Flooding during the rainy season often drives inhabitants out temporarily, but many return to their homes regardless, as this is the cheapest and most lawless part of town. It’s a prime location for smugglers and criminals who use the flooded area to avoid authorities. Aguere holds a curious allure, drawing adventurers and traders seeking relics and treasures buried under the murky waters.
Naaks East
Naaks East endured a relentless torment from the molten rivers flowing from Morgrun’s Mantle, leaving the village scorched and sweltering under a constant haze of ash and sulfur. Day and night, the air pressed down like a smothering weight, thick and bitter with the stench of burning stone. The ground itself pulsed with heat, and every surface seemed to radiate a feverish warmth that blistered skin and seared throats. In this oppressive climate, metal warped, buildings cracked, and only the hardiest souls survived the slow, unyielding burn that defined life in Naaks East.
Ten Mile Road
Stretching from the outskirts of Naaks toward the lava river, Ten Mile Road serves as the main access route for the town. Once a bustling trade route, it now sees less traffic due to its perilous proximity to the lava flow. Ten Mile Road is also rumored to be haunted by specters of fallen soldiers from the Civil War. During quiet nights, travelers report seeing ghostly apparitions drifting along the roadside, an eerie reminder of the town’s brutal past.
Each of these places could add layers of intrigue and opportunity for conflict, mystery, and survival, shaping Naaks as a place where the environment is as much a challenge as the people.
The Dragon’s Cup
The Dragon’s Cup is a notorious inn and tavern located in the town of Naaks in the region of Hauth. It lies approximately 10 miles west of Morgrun’s Mantle. Located in a rocky hollow on the edge of town, Dragon’s Cup can be hard to locate if you’re not familiar with the area.
To the native locals of Naaks, the part of town where this tavern is located is just a bit rough-and-tumble, known for “unsavory” types. To most of those outside Hauth, however, the place was nothing short of a savage, ultra violent, hellscape. Fist fights, sword fights, a frequent array violence and even murder were fairly regular occurrences at the Dragon’s Cup. On any given night it was not unusual to spot rotting corpses lying about, or even impaled on wooden stakes near the tavern’s entrance.
