The Birdkin were peculiar, bird-like humanoids who wandered the remote regions of the Wildlands continent. Known for their unusual, even grotesque appearance, they carved out lives in the highest branches, nesting in rudimentary homes woven into the treetops. These structures, crafted with skill using sticks, vines, leaves, and they could even build sophisticated bridges that hung from branches high above the ground, swaying precariously in the wind but providing refuge from the dangers below.
Physically frail yet gifted with intelligence or wisdom beyond their humble lives, Birdkin often displayed unexpected cunning and insight despite their animalistic appearance.
Description
Standing at a modest average height of around four feet, Birdkin were small and exceedingly thin, with hunched frames that gave them a perpetually furtive stance. Their oversized, razor-sharp beaks were strikingly prominent and rendered them unable to speak any humanoid language; instead, they communicated through an array of birdlike whistles, caws, and chirps—sounds that baffled and unnerved other inhabitants of the Wildlands.
Their avian expressions of language, a complex yet largely incomprehensible system, kept them isolated, as few others in the Wildlands could decipher the subtle meaning behind their calls and trills.
Gliding
The Birdkin lacked the power of true flight; however, like the legendary Ravan Brichal of the Wildlands, they possessed the ability to glide short distances. With a running leap from the treetops, Birdkin could spread their feathered arms and coast gracefully over distances, swooping between trees or across small forest clearings. This gliding skill was both a defensive tactic and a means of transport, enabling them to evade threats or navigate the dense Wildlands with ease.

Outcasts of the Wildlands
Despite their sharp minds, the Birdkin were often shunned by other races of the Wildlands. Their speech, composed of animalistic sounds, and their haunting resemblance to birds caused them to be viewed with suspicion and discomfort. Considered lesser by the more civilized humanoids, they endured lives of seclusion and mistrust, cast as eerie outsiders with an unsettling gaze that seemed to pierce through to one’s very soul.
Dire Crows
In their solitude, Birdkin found companionship in a most unusual way: they domesticated the wild Dire Crows of the Wildlands. These large, intelligent birds became their steadfast allies and, for many Birdkin, their primary means of travel. Trained with patience and care, Dire Crows served as mounts, allowing Birdkin to explore the skies and to cover great distances that their limited gliding abilities could not.
Regions
Rare and elusive, Birdkin were seldom seen outside their secluded forest homes. They clustered in small groups within the dense woodlands of Windslan and eastern Hauth, where towering trees offered a natural barrier against unwelcome intruders. Some Birdkin communities were also rumored to inhabit the tropical depths of the Vüdos forests, where the thick canopy shielded them from both predators and curious eyes alike.
History
Though their origin likely dates back to the pre-Origin I era, little historical record remains of the Birdkin. Unlike other races, the Birdkin recorded no written history, and ancient Wildlands scholars paid them little mind. Over time, their legacy faded into obscurity, reduced to myth and half-remembered stories passed down in whispers. This neglect, combined with the Birdkin’s reclusive habits, cast them as an enigmatic and misunderstood species, shadowed in mystery.
