The Shadowmantle was a half-humanoid, half-elemental creature that dwelled mostly underground in caverns, crypts, and dungeons, although some were known to haunt the dark reaches of bogs and mist-laden forests. Spawned from an anomaly within the Grey Weave—a shadowy, ethereal force from which dark magic drew its potency—the Shadowmantle was both a creation and extension of the void. It thrived in darkness, lurking in desolate places where it employed ambush tactics to ensnare its prey. Its touch drained the life essence from living beings, gradually sapping their strength until they succumbed to death. Once a Shadowmantle claimed a victim, the body disintegrated into fine, gray ash, the essence absorbed to amplify the creature’s own power.
Description
Shadowmantles were formed of a dense, shadowy matter, appearing as an ominous mass of darkness molded into a vaguely humanoid shape. Towering around six feet tall, they could stretch their smoky forms to over eight feet when invoking fear or dominance. Lacking any facial features, they presented an unsettlingly blank visage, their true face concealed within the void. Able to hover and glide silently through the air, Shadowmantles moved with an eerie grace, often slinking through shadows before striking with an ice-cold touch that drained life itself.

Legends spoke of Shadowmantles emerging from the Grey Weave during rare cosmic alignments, when the balance between light and dark tipped in favor of shadow. They were ancient entities, said to predate even the oldest known records of dark magic. It was rumored that Shadowmantles could communicate with one another through whispers in the shadows, exchanging knowledge across vast distances, plotting and coordinating their movements to sow fear. Only powerful enchantments and sacred light could repel them, for they were virtually immune to physical attacks. Scholars of arcane history believed that some Shadowmantles were once mortal beings who had dabbled too deeply in forbidden magic and were forever bound to the Grey Weave, cursed to wander the world as creatures of darkness.
